Research at Cranfield

Researchers studying for a higher degree will benefit from the Doctoral Training Centre (DTC), which will enable you as a student to join one of the specialist research communities based on your field of expertise. The DTC will also help you develop transferable skills that will support your personal development, as well as being attractive to potential employers. 

Teaching and Learning

Cranfield sets up and reviews their programmes with members of industry to ensure they are relevant and up-to-date so that your skills are what employers want and you are able to transfer these skills to your working life quickly and easily.

Most of Cranfield's staff have industry backgrounds and are leading academic experts in their fields. Industry experts teach alongside the academic team on many of the programmes providing real-life challenges so that you learn in an environment similar to the business world you will go on to.

Experience in the themes covers many subject disciplines including: aircraft design, aviation safety, driver behaviours, crash impact testing, motorsport, renewable fuels, oil and gas exploration, all aspects of water management, soils, food processing and post-harvest research, biosensors, nanotechnology, materials manufacturing, design, business, economics and finance, defence technologies and regulation and policy development.

Support and Funding

International Student Support

Cranfield is a truly international university, with over half of the students coming from outside the UK, representing more than 110 countries. This means you will be exposed to many different cultures, attitudes and experiences during your time here. Over half study part-time whilst in employment giving you the opportunity to share ideas and learn from those already in industry, and providing a stimulating experience that mirrors the global workplace.

Facilities

Cranfield's library offers access to a rich collection of over 14,000 electronic journal title and 200 academic and industry/profession-specific databases to support your work at Cranfield; enabling you to discover current, relevant cross-disciplinary information, as well as explore applied subjects in great depth. The university offers tailored group and one-to-one training to ensure that you are able to make the most of the resources available.

Crandield's many facilities include: cabin evacuation laboratories; crash testing equipment; oil and gas engineering rigs; icing tunnels; off-road testing facility; soil dynamics laboratory; flying and welding laboratories; a £1 million flight deck simulator; body armour test house; biomechanics laboratories; an experimental farm and even a sewage treatment works!

The university also offers excellent computer facilities with an extensive network of workstations available in open access areas across campus. You will have access to leading software applications, collaboration and learning tools, as well as high-performance research computing facilities and specialist support if you are undertaking larger scale projects.  

Location – space to study and socialise

The Cranfield campuses give you the best of both worlds – a spacious, quiet and mature study environment with the advantage of being conveniently close to many towns, cities and facilities. Everything you need is on-campus for day-to-day life and studying, but the central location means you are only 15 minutes from Milton Keynes and an hour away from London. There is rail and road access to most major airports as well as coach and train stations. The Cranfield campus also has its own airport for private executive business travel.

Cranfield Defence and Security (CDS) is a Cranfield School based at the Ministry of Defence establishment on the Oxfordshire/Wiltshire borders. It is only seven miles from Swindon and Bath, Cheltenham, Bristol and Oxford are all within an hour’s drive and London is less than two hours away by car.

Living on or off campus

On the Cranfield campus there are many different types of accommodation for single students, couples and families with different styles and facilities to suit your preferences. As a rural campus there is no inner-city commuting, and living on campus means being just minutes away from lectures, facilities and free parking. If you prefer to live off-campus, you can choose the nearby village of Cranfield, the historic town of Bedford or the UK's fastest growing and vibrant city of Milton Keynes.

Students at the Shrivenham campus live in rented accommodation in nearby Watchfield, Farringdon or the large town of Swindon.
